Always keep on EGGing

When you buy a Big Green Egg, you want a warranty on your EGG that is just as sound as the product itself. And that’s what you get! We provide a limited lifetime warranty on the materials and fabrication of all the ceramic parts, and an extended warranty on all other parts. Isn’t that a comforting idea? That way, you can keep on cooking for ever on your Big Green Egg.

Have you registered your EGG yet? Get this sorted as quickly as possible after purchasing your EGG. In addition, we recommend that you hang onto the proof of purchase for your EGG, as we may ask for it at a later stage.

To worry or not to worry

We understand that you want to know what types of damage to your Big Green Egg you should be concerned about, especially when it comes to the Cast Iron Grid and the ceramic parts of your Big Green Egg. Fortunately, it’s not always necessary to repair damage or replace a part. Some damage is purely cosmetic and does not affect the functioning of your Big Green Egg in any way.

However, there are also types of damage that will hinder the functioning of your kamado. In this case, you should contact your dealer to ensure the part is replaced as soon as possible.

Below, we have used simple illustrations to show you which damage to your Big Green Egg requires replacement and which does not. Please note that the fire ring was modified in 2020; it no longer contains notches at the top.

Ceramic

The ceramic in your Big Green Egg expands as it heats up and contracts as it cools down. Due to its high quality structure, the ceramic will expand and contract very evenly. As a result, the chance of cracks is small. Nevertheless, cracks may sometimes occur. And while this may seem like a defect, in most cases, cracks are harmless and will not affect the functioning of your Big Green Egg. In this case, there is really no need to replace the part. An advantage of a crack in your ceramic is that it has more room to expand.

Prevention is better than replacement

Proper maintenance and careful use of your Big Green Egg will in many cases prevent unnecessary damage to the ceramic. Here are some useful tips:

  • Never move the Big Green Egg while it’s hot. This is not only safer, but also reduces the risk of cracks.
  • Always leave a layer of ash in the Big Green Egg. This slightly blocks the airflow, meaning the temperature rises more gradually, and prevents the ceramic from warming up too fast.
  • Use a basket to insert the heat deflector in your Big Green Egg. This prevents you from dropping the heat deflector in the Big Green Egg, as this could cause cracks, especially when the Big Green Egg is fired up.
  • You can use the ash poker to remove excess ash from the charcoal. Do this only when the charcoal is extinguished and the firebox has cooled down completely.
  • If you do not have a basket, ensure that you always use the Grid Lifter when using the Cast Iron Grid or Stainless Steel Grid. This allows you to gently place the grid on the ceramic fire ring.
  • It is not strictly necessary to burn your Big Green Egg clean because the fats in your Big Green Egg also create flavour. If you do want to burn the kamado clean, for example, because you want to prepare a product that does not require an intense smoky flavour, burn the Big Green Egg clean at 250°C for 30 minutes. The ceramic does not need to be burnt until white.
  • All temperatures above 300 °C are unnecessary when cooking (even for pizzas!) and increase the risk of damage to the ceramic.
  • Use a table nest and do not place a stone under the Big Green Egg when used in a table or if you install the kamado in an outdoor kitchen. This creates a layer of air between the Big Green Egg and the surface, which allows the ceramic to cool down on the underside.
  • If you have not used the Big Green Egg for a long time or it has been standing in the rain for a while, then heat it up gradually. Do not exceed 100 °C for the first hour. Then you can start gradually increasing the temperature. The moisture must first be removed from the Big Green Egg and, if the temperature is too high, the ceramic can crack.
  • Therefore, always use fresh charcoal if you have not used it for a long time, because charcoal retains moisture.
