Big Green Egg

How often do you ignite the charcoal in your Big Green Egg in winter? Less often than in spring, summer and autumn? What a shame! In the winter months there are loads of seasonal ingredients and seasonal dishes that taste even better when you prepare them on your Kamado. In short, it’s grilling in winter time!

Big Green Egg

A winter BBQ

Not that long ago, barbecuing was regarded as a typical summer activity. The Big Green Egg changed all of that. After all, why would you only enjoy your Kamado for a few months if you could enjoy it for 365 days a year? Thanks to the unique and insulating ceramic, the outside temperature is irrelevant for your EGG, which means that nothing is stopping you from grilling in winter. The temperature in the EGG is as stable as ever and it couldn’t give a hoot about rain or snow. Particularly, when it’s under the Rain Cap  . No wonder that grilling in winter is hot, hot, hot! You can grill all the time! Even if the temperature drops below freezing. Whether you feel like a tasty winter stew, a main dish soup or want to organise a winter BBQ for family and friends.

Cooking low & slow

One of the many advantages of your Big Green Egg is that you can prepare everything on it. Is that delicious sauerkraut dish one of the reasons for looking forward to the winter season year after year? Once you’ve prepared it on your EGG you’re spoilt for life. Do take the cold and bleak weather into account when deciding on what you’re going to prepare on the EGG. Opt for dishes that require little work so that you can let the EGG do the work for you. That sauerkraut dish? Once it’s placed in the EGG, all you have to do is wait till it’s ready. And how about a pork neck that you can cook low and slow for hours, a tasty piece of pork belly or any other big lovely piece of meat? In this way slow cooking becomes snow cooking!

Roasting vegetables

While cooking a big piece of meat you could also roast some vegetables. They require some low and slow cooking as well, which will match the slow cooking of the meat at a low temperature perfectly. In this way, you can very easily serve a delicious and complete winter meal. You can’t go wrong with a stew. It all boils down to searing the ingredients in the Dutch oven , adding the moisture and leaving it to simmer to its heart’s content. Are you one of those die-hards or has the weather forecast promised a dry and sunny winter’s day? If so, you could always opt for more challenging recipes for your winter BBQ. Ones that let you enjoy the fresh open air while cooking on your Big Green Egg.
