Every cooking session with the Big Green Egg starts with the right kind of fuel. The key to success of any tasty dish is to use the best quality charcoal, because the results will in part depend on the type of charcoal you use in your kamado. One thing is certain: the flavour of ingredients cooked with good charcoal is unsurpassed.

Which charcoal is best to use?

Charcoal comes in different shapes, sizes and qualities. There are soft, medium and hard types of charcoal. For the Big Green Egg, we recommend using a medium-hard charcoal of good, natural quality without unnecessary additives and flavourings, that does not give off an excessively strong flavour. Because not every dish can stand up to a strong charcoal flavour. There is a choice of two types of Big Green Egg charcoal: 100% Natural Charcoal and Pure Charcoal.

100% Natural Charcoal

Big Green Egg 100% Natural Charcoal has been a bestseller for years. As the name suggests, it is a 100% natural charcoal, made from hardwoods such as beech and hornbeam. A combination in which the aforementioned characteristics come together. The 100% Natural Charcoal produces a fairly neutral but subtle smokey flavour.

Pure Charcoal

Pure Charcoal, is a unique charcoal made up of a blend of oak, beech and hornbeam. Thanks to a unique process during the charring of wood into charcoal, Pure Charcoal is a very pure, practically smoke-free charcoal, with no tar and 62% less nitrogen and 82% less fine dust (PM10 and smaller) emissions compared to most charcoals. It has a very neutral taste. Want to add extra flavour in certain dishes? Then you can do this using smoke.
