Maintaining your Big Green Egg

Maintaining your Big Green Egg is easy. The better you care for your EGG, the longer it will stay looking good and remain in top condition. Here's how to maintain its key components.

rEGGulator

The 2.0 air regulator on your EGG is made of cast iron, with a silicone grip and a protective anti-rust coating. Is it starting to look a little dull? Rub it with Crisco or vegetable oil, ideally while it’s still warm.

Calibrating the thermometer

One of the greatest strengths of your Big Green Egg is cooking at a precise temperature. To make sure your thermometer continues to give accurate readings, you can easily calibrate it. All you need is a pan of boiling water and a glass of ice water – easy!

Base & Dome

The ceramic of your beautiful green Big Green Egg is the best you can get. Clean the outside of the base and dome with some soapy water – do this while it’s still slightly warm. You can maintain the inside of the dome using a wire brush or some medium-grit sandpaper.

Hinge system

The hinge is made of steel and moves flexibly with the ceramic, which helps prevent cracks. Due to the expansion and contraction from temperature changes, check it now and then and tighten the nuts and bolts if needed. While you're at it, treat the hinge with a bit of WD-40. Also check the band – if it’s slipped, realign and readjust it.

Felt

The felt cushions the lid and prevents damage when closing your EGG; it also helps seal it airtight. If it gets too hard, it stops doing its job. Time to replace it. You’ll want to do this roughly once every two years.

Cast-iron accessories

Cast iron is a fantastic, ultra-durable material, but it can be brittle and needs some extra care now and then. Noticed any rust? Heat your EGG to 250 °C. Scrub the cast iron clean with a wire brush and place it in the EGG for 10 minutes. Carefully (it’s hot!) rub it with Crisco or vegetable oil and return it to the EGG for another 30 minutes. It’ll look as good as new!

Stainless Steel Grid

The stainless steel grid is easiest to clean while it’s still hot, ideally with the Dual Brush Grid Scrubber. Not in the mood to clean right after cooking? You can also do it next time when preheating.

convEGGtor®

The convEGGtor turns your Big Green Egg into an outdoor oven. Use a Drip Pan to keep it clean while cooking. Forgot to use one? Fire up your EGG to 250 °C, place the convEGGtor in upside down (legs facing down) and let it burn clean. Once there’s no more smoke, it’s done. Want to clean it straight away? Scrub it clean with the Dual Brush Grid Scrubber.

Fire bowl & Fire ring

Easy! These components require no maintenance. However, do take them out every now and then to remove any old ash from your EGG.
